Tell us about your university course...

I study general engineering, which explores the diverse and exciting fundamentals of several disciplines, including civil, mechanical, electrical, electronic and materials engineering. Everyday I learn about something groundbreaking – it could be something discovered decades or even centuries ago, or maybe only last year. 

Has something you learned in your studies ever changed the way you think about the world?

That happens all the time. For example, learning about the number phi – 1.618 – was astounding! It’s ubiquitous in nature, architecture, biology... everywhere. It taught me that there is beauty and design in even the simplest of phenomena in the world and the majority of this it founded on the fundamental laws of physics.

Has your choice of college course made a difference to you, personally?

Yes! Engineering has encouraged me to get involved in team-work and become better at listening. Everyone can teach me something and cooperation allows results and goals to be realised more efficiently and successfully. I also enjoy the challenge of studying engineering. I always loved science and maths, but this course has inspired me to really develop my interest in these subjects. 

What are the most exciting developments happening in your field at the moment?

Biomedical engineering is at a fantastic point, particularly looking at how technology can interact with the body’s nervous system. Materials engineering and nanoscience are also uncovering incredible materials that have extraordinary properties that can influence the performance of energy systems and electrical devices in remarkable ways.
